This week class was very interesting and will surely help not only in teaching but in administration.
We discussed mostly instruction strategies, but Marzano reading also include classroom management and classroom curriculum design.

What I like about Marzano is that he looks at what others done and what works and summarizes it all together. So as Dr. Andy said "What Marzano says works as it has been tested". :)

I really like the part on instructional strategies that work. I really liked the example Dr. Andy gave us and I will surely use so of the techniques in my classroom.
We talked about advanced organizers, remedial classes, feedback etc. As I already mentioned they were explained with examples which helped me to understand the techniques better.

Applications:
1. Give my students feedback as soon as possible. Do not wait till the students forget what the assignments were about. The feedback should be fast. If a student has a presentation give him some feedback right after it, do not wait.
2. Homework - do not go over the top with homework, too much homework might make the students hate my subject.
3. Mastery learning - sometimes it is worth to overdo certain things, make the student overpractice certain concepts so later they do them automatically.
4. As an administrator I should remember that there are many strategies that work, but I should not expect my teachers to include them in every lesson. I have seen it so many times that admins criticize teachers for not including this or that in their lessons. They would like to see all the strategies that work included in one lesson.

As I already said, it was a great lesson and I am sure the strategies that has been introduced to us will help me become a better teacher and administrator.

Very good overview Marcin. You make an excellent point that we certainly should not expect teachers to be including all of this in each lesson! It's better to think of the ideas as being like a menu of options to choose from.

You put it nicely Dr. Andy - menu of options :) I like it.

I mention that many people (admins) expect teachers to include all of those strategies in one lesson which is simply impossible. I also experienced it myself on a few occasions.

Years ago Tom Peters stated in one of his seminars on management practices, that, in far too many organizations, "middle management does not add value, period." While this may seem a harsh statement, unfortunately a great deal of my own experience in schools (and it would seem yours as well) has tended to validate Tom's statement.

Here we go Dr. Andy.

We talked about teaching a bit and Marzano teaching practices that work. During this lesson we also talked about feedback. That it should be timely, as close to the event we are giving feedback about as possible.
So, I am checking my students exams (midterms). I finished one class last night and told the students that the scores are ready and I am willing to give it to them via email (I made sure I protect their privacy etc., so it is not an issue here).
Well, this morning there is a post on my facebook wall from another teacher telling me that the policy of the school is not to give the scores to the students:
"marcin...you can't give them their score, you can tell them passed or not, but no scores yet. the office gives it to them later...i think after they pay their bills. sorry boys, you know that's the rules."

So I can tell them you passed or you failed! Well you can pass with 50 or 80 or a 100! And you can fail miserably or be close to a passing score. I had a few students with 46 - it is failing score but well, I can tell them they are close, they are almost there, and they will surely be able to pass with a bit more effort. I tried to use it as a motivational tool. Now I can't!
Yeah, the school will give them the results after 2 weeks or even more!! What value will it have then? I was planning to schedule a few sessions where students can have a look at their tests (individually) and see their mistakes, but in this case I doubt it can be done.

I am so angry and disappointed. You try to be a good teacher, improve yourself and then what? You are stopped by this bureaucratic machine for which fees are more important than effective teaching and students' improvement.

Topic: What works in school from Rober J. Marzano's perspective and discussion on three issues:
1- Instructional Strategies
2- Classroom Management
3- Classroom Curriculum Design
Instructor:Dr. Andy
The discussion about three issues from Marzano,Dr. Andy gave a brief and useful explanation with different examples about Marzano's, and the important of his theory. In fact Marzano has tried to give variety discussion from others such as Hatties's research Bannett & Creemers...and ideas, integrating them and makes on his perspective and examination and tests on "9 factors Categories of Instructional Strategies That Affect Student Achievement"and " Instructional Categories Divided in to Specific Behaviors"and " 7 elements of lesson Design". about Classroom Management four distinct of teacher actions : 1- establishing & reinforcing rules and Procedures.2- carrying out disciplinary actions.3- maintaining effective teachers & students relationship.4- maintaining an appropriate mental set for management. Dr. Andy has tried to explain such as teacher need to organize the lessen which is going to teach suppose drawing a picture is one of the ways that student will understand what is going to learn, as Dr. Andy gave example, to teach science about planet and solar system to draw on the board and explain, then students will learn fast. How to evaluating them by verbal or logical test. the importance of correcting & evaluating them, organizing, preparing class, and feedback, grouping students, mastery learning or over learning that will help students, not forcing them, positive way will give best result on enhancing students learning, homework and students feedback,Meta cognition , it is interesting when Dr. Andy make a diagram for solving any problems,he explained the stages of how to persuading students to writing an assay, kids will understand sequences what they have to do? choosing a topic/collecting informations/out line/elaborate/ draft.an other interesting he draw two circle on the board and with different countries name and tried to separate the differents and similarities,as whole teacher's vision and mission strategies, all to teach are students satisfaction, feedback to teachers high performance.

Applications;
1-As a teacher need to be positive thinker and easy problem solver, passion and patient.
2-Teacher need strategies to get ready before to teach.
3-Teaching creativity, such as Dr. Andy trying to create different interesting example and techniques.

As my opinion, an administrator do not put teachers in confusion , it is impossible to use all theories or ways in advance, teachers are needed to figure out of the classroom situation and using them in to proper time, just some direction and training them in case to inform.
* Thanks Dr. Andy ,it was interesting topic that gave me a lot of information and techniques which are really useful for an administrator & teachers.

GOD BLESS

Mali, excellent review of the ideas, please be sure to let me know if there are still things you would like to be more clear on. Marcin, I share your frustration and can certainly empathize! Hang in there and give your students what you are able to while bending but perhaps not actually breaking the rules. Unfortunately this case you describe seems to be just one more example to validate Tom's statement (see above)!

Thanks for your kindness,as i realized your teaching style techeniques is clear and understanable in several points, but i'll like to share some:
1) more concern to the text book and the topic, also further more related explainations from other theories.
2)Asking stuents, to make sure they learned, or if in case of confusesion you will explain more.
3) Do not emghasize on power point. This can be a kind of style for learning. It is more effective on student learning, because do not focus only the words on the power point. such as some teacher doing, they only read the power point ,it looks like unprofessional, and plus lack of knowledge. If supose student ask, the teacher repeating the same words from power point....
God Bless, Mali

Title: What works at schools

Dear Dr. Andy,

That week we have discussed about the teacher-level factors that affect student achievement such as:
- Instructional Strategies
- Classroom Management
- Classroom Curriculum Design
In the class, what we have talked the most is about the "instructional strategies".
According to their research, we see that there are many strategies that teacher can take them to apply in the class to make their teaching more effective. Anyway, in one lesson teacher could not use all strategies to apply their so teacher has to select the strategies that appropriate to their lesson and their students.
Some parts on the instructional strategies that I am most interested are:

1. Summarizing and note taking: is really important for students, when they can summary what they have learned it means that they understand the lesson. Anyways, student is easy to forget if they don't take note. Moreover, taking note can help student to take it to review when they forget it or when they have doubt in some parts or before their exam.
2. Feedback: as a nature of students while they do something or after their exam they are really eager to know about their feedback and their result from the teacher. So as we are teachers we have to give feedback to the students as soon as possible.
3. Questioning: asking the questions can help students to recall what they know, and pull them to interest or participate with us. Moreover, asking question about new content to get them share their ideas so teacher can know their understanding about new content or how much they know about new content.

Best regards,

nimol
